Basic Manners

I can teach your dog basic skills, and more importantly teach you how to teach your dog these skills! We start by teaching your dog these skills in an easy low distraction environment with lots of rewards, and work up to them being able to perform them in a higher distraction environment without having to be rewarded with a treat every time.

Teaching some of these basic skills is a great way for your dog to get some mental exercise. Learning a new skill can be just as tiring for your dog as a run around in the dog park. Teaching your dog new skills is also a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Basic skills include:

  • Attention
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Leave it
  • Recall
  • Loose leash walking
  • Crate training
  • Manners

Behaviour Problems

If you are struggling with a specific behaviour problem with your dog, I can help you come up with strategies to prevent your dog from doing these unwanted behaviours and teach them an alternate and better way to behave. Many common behaviour problems are actually natural dog behaviours, but for us humans, they are problems. The first step in solving any behaviour problem is prevention and management. We can prevent your dog from practising an unwanted behaviour while teaching them the behaviour we would like to see instead.

Behaviour problems may include:

  • Chewing
  • Barking
  • House training
  • Self control
  • Door manners
  • Jumping
  • Mouthing
  • Leash concerns
  • Taking treats hard

Fear and Reactivity

If your dog is fearful or reactive (barks and lunges at other dogs, strangers, bikes, etc), I can help! The first step is to understand why they are reacting this way. Most of the time reactive dogs are actually afraid of whatever it is they are reacting to. Their "aggressive" display is simply a display to increase distance between them and the other dog, stranger, bike, etc.

Once we understand why our dogs are reactive, we can work on narrowing in on exactly what their triggers are. This is where learning about canine communication becomes really important. We will learn to read your dogs body language and predict when they are feeling afraid or uncomfortable and when they are likely to react.

Then we can work on teaching them a more appropriate reaction, and help them to become more confident and overcome their fears.

A fearful dog is not always a reactive dog, so even if your dog isn't having these "aggressive" outbursts, they might still be just as afraid of strangers, other dogs, bikes, etc. I can help these guys gain confidence as well, and ensure that we prevent them from having to resort to the "aggressive" displays we see in reactive dogs.

Tricks & Games

If your dog is already a star at all the basic manners skills, why not teach them some fun new tricks and games. Even an old dog can learn new tricks!! This is a great way to get your dog some mental exercise and can be a great alternative to walks on those cold/rainy days. And best of all, it's fun for both you and your dog!

Some tricks and games we can work on include:

  • Shake a paw
  • Spin
  • Wave
  • Bow
  • Reading
  • Touch
  • Crawl
  • Find it
  • Shaping
  • Jump through hoops/arms

Our human world has a lot going on, and all that busyness can be challenging and scary for your dog. This fear can often come out in the form of aggression causing your dog to make embarrassing displays at the end of her leash - lunging, barking, and growling at dogs, strangers, skateboards, cars, bikes, etc. If you dread leaving your house with your dog for fear of what or whom you may run into, then this class is for you. If your dog is overly timid and you want them to gain confidence around other people or dogs, then this class is also for you.

We will cover the following:

  • Canine Communication
  • Understanding reactivity and what your dog's behaviour means
  • How to improve your dog’s leash skills & focus
  • Building your dog's confidence around handling, people, and other dogs
  • Understanding how to set your dog up for success
  • How to modify fear, reactivity and aggression

The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first 3 months of life. This is the most influential time during your puppy’s development and it is critical to start training & socializing! During this time, puppies should be exposed to as many new people, animals, stimuli and environments as can be achieved safely. Because the first three months are the period when sociability outweighs fear, this is the primary window of opportunity for puppies to adapt to new people, animals, and experiences. This class will build a solid foundation of basic manners skills, all while working proactively to prevent the development of more serious issues such as fears, aggression and anxiety.

We will cover the following:

  • Name attention
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Recall
  • Leash skills
  • Manners
  • Leave it
  • Impulse Control
  • Tricks & Games
  • Behaviour Troubleshooting (jumping, demand, or attention barking etc.)
  • Socialization (play time with the other dogs in class)
